In 2017, a tragic incident occurred at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where several children died due to a disruption in the hospital’s oxygen supply.
The proprietor of Pushpa Sales, which supplied oxygen to the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College, was implicated after more than 60 children died at the hospital. Our investigation team looked into this matter, and according to our report, we found that Pushpa Sales Private Limited is not eligible to participate in any medical-related tenders. We have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court (PIL NO: 40443/2017, Allahabad High Court).
Here’s a summary of the situation:
- Incident: In August 2017, the BRD Medical College experienced a shortage of oxygen, leading to the deaths of numerous children, primarily in the neonatal and encephalitis wards.
- Alleged Cause: The oxygen shortage was reportedly due to the non-payment of dues to the oxygen supplier, who then stopped deliveries.
- Government’s Response and Controversy: The Uttar Pradesh government faced criticism for allegedly ignoring repeated warnings about the pending oxygen payments. The initial blame was placed on the oxygen supplier, but later investigations suggested a more complex situation involving hospital authorities and alleged financial mismanagement.
- Dr. Kafeel Khan’s Involvement: Dr. Kafeel Khan, a pediatrician at the hospital, was suspended and later dismissed from service in connection with the incident. While initially hailed by some as a hero for allegedly arranging oxygen cylinders, he was subsequently charged with medical negligence, corruption, and dereliction of duty. Some reports suggest he was unfairly targeted and became a scapegoat.
- Current Status: Investigations into the Gorakhpur tragedy have faced scrutiny, and as of recent reports, no one has been held definitively responsible for the deaths. Dr. Khan has since challenged his dismissal in court.
